Bonsai plants have long been practiced in Asian countries such as China and Japan, where the tradition first developed. These miniature trees, grown in small pots or containers, are neatly and creatively trimmed into unique designs and have long been used to decorate gardens. But now, growing bonsai trees has become a hobby and pastime for many who wish to show their bonsai tree skills. People throughout the world have become attached to this unique garden practice, and many bonsai clubs and societies have formed. Bonsai trees have become a work of art and a symbol of people’s love for nature and the unique things it is capable of.

International groups such as the World Bonsai Friendship Federation have helped to spread the art of bonsai throughout the world, and since then bonsai trees have become extremely popular. The World Bonsai Friendship Federation has held the WBFF World Bonsai Photo Contest for several years to display bonsai trees that people have put immense effort into. The federation has also declared that for the 2009 contest, the response and number of entries has increased so much that they have been forced to delay the results of the contest due to the great amount of computer work and judging that must be done. Nevertheless, this has shown that bonsai has become a popular practice known throughout the world.
